How to Style Your Remy Hair Topper for Everyday Life in Queensland

One of the questions we get asked most often, especially in the weeks after a fitting, is: “How do I actually style this every day?”

It’s a completely fair question. Your topper is fitted, colour-matched, and looking beautiful in the salon. Then you get home, try to recreate it the next morning, and suddenly it feels a little less simple than it did in the chair.

Here’s the reassurance: that learning curve is normal, and it’s short. Most of our clients at our Toowoomba studio, many from across the Darling Downs, tell us that, within a week or two, putting on and styling their topper takes less than five minutes. Here are the hair topper styling tips that get you there — whether you’re brand new to a clip-in hair topper or simply refining your hair topper everyday routine.

Start With the Right Foundation: Clean, Tangle-Free Hair

Before you clip your topper (or hair piece, as some clients call it) in, your natural hair needs to be in good shape underneath it. That means clean, combed through, and either completely dry or air-dried, depending on how you style.

A common mistake in the early days is clipping a topper over hair that’s still slightly damp. Moisture gets trapped under the base, which can cause discomfort and affect how the topper sits. If you wash your hair daily, style your topper after your hair has had time to dry. Even just air drying for 20 minutes makes a real difference.

If you prefer not to wash your natural hair every day (which is actually healthier for most hair types), a light dry shampoo on your roots before clipping in keeps things fresh and gives the clips a little more grip.

Clipping In: The Two-Minute Routine

Once your hair is ready, clipping in your topper should take under two minutes once you’ve done it a few times. Here’s the method we walk through at every Applebom fitting:

  1. Create a parting: use a comb or your fingers to part your hair where the topper will sit. This gives you a clean base to clip onto.
  2. Open all the clips: open every clip on the topper before placing it on your head. Trying to open them once it’s already on is fiddly and unnecessary.
  3. Position at the crown: place the front of the base at your natural part, sitting comfortably along the hairline. Look in the mirror: it should sit where your thinning begins.
  4. Close the clips from front to back: start with the front clips, press firmly until you feel them close. Work your way to the back. The base should sit flat with no gaps.
  5. Blend and smooth: use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to gently blend your natural hair over the edges of the base. This is what creates the seamless finish.

That’s it. A gentle shake of your head should confirm it feels secure. If anything shifts, check that all clips are fully closed.

Styling With Heat: Yes, You Can

Because your Applebom topper is 100% Remy human hair, you can use your blow dryer, curling iron, or straightener on it just as you would on your natural hair — the same core principles used for styling hair extensions apply here too. In fact, for most women, blending the topper with their natural hair using a little heat is what creates the most seamless, polished result.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Always apply a thermal protectant spray before heat styling, which protects the cuticle and extends the life of your topper
  • Medium heat is enough. You don’t need the highest setting to get a great result
  • Style your natural hair and the topper together in the same direction, using the blow dryer to blend the sections at the edges
  • Let everything cool completely before heading out. Warm hair holds a style; hot hair that cools in the wrong position sets there

For a quick everyday look, a round brush and a blow dryer on medium heat to smooth everything together takes about three minutes and gives a consistently polished result.

Wearing Your Topper in Queensland’s Climate

This one comes up a lot, and it’s a legitimate concern for anyone wearing a Remy hair topper in Queensland. Humidity is real, and here in Toowoomba and the wider Darling Downs it affects hair styling for everyone, topper or not.

The good news is that 100% Remy human hair responds to humidity exactly the way your own hair does. It may get a little more volume on a humid day. It may frizz slightly if you’re caught in the rain. If your natural hair does something in a given climate, your topper will too, which actually makes it easier to manage than you might think, because you already know how to work with it.

A few practical hair topper humidity tips for Queensland conditions:

  • A light anti-humidity serum or smoothing spray applied to both your natural hair and the topper before heading out keeps frizz at bay on high-humidity days
  • On very hot days, wearing your hair up (see below) can be cooler and actually makes the topper less noticeable, not more
  • If you’re outdoors in the sun for extended periods, the same UV protection you’d use on your natural hair applies: a light UV-protective spray helps preserve colour over time
  • After a sweaty day or a walk in the rain, simply air dry your topper on its stand overnight and it’ll be ready to wear again the next morning

Everyday Wear: Updos, Active Days & What to Know

Wondering how to wear a hair topper beyond a simple down style? This surprises a lot of women, but yes: a well-fitted topper can absolutely be worn in a low ponytail, a loose bun, or a half-up style. The key is that the base needs to sit high enough on the crown that it’s concealed within the updo.

A few things to know:

  • Low ponytails work beautifully: a hair topper ponytail adds volume and fullness at the crown that a thin ponytail often lacks
  • High, tight buns are trickier and may expose the base or clips, so a loose, relaxed bun is a safer choice
  • Half-up styles, pulling just the top section back, are one of the most natural and easy looks with a topper
  • If wearing up regularly is important to you, tell us during your consultation. Base placement can be adjusted slightly to make updos work more seamlessly

Active days

Walking, gym sessions, gardening, beach days: all completely doable with a hair topper. The clips hold well during everyday movement and most light to moderate activity.

For more intense exercise where you’re sweating heavily, we’d suggest tying your hair back for a more secure feel. Some of our clients use a very light headband at the front of the topper on active days for extra peace of mind, just enough to keep everything in place without affecting the look.

Swimming is a special case. While Remy human hair can technically get wet, chlorine and saltwater are tough on the hair and will shorten the lifespan of your topper significantly with repeated exposure. Most women choose to remove their topper before swimming and simply enjoy the water without it.

Special Occasions: Going a Little Further

Your topper can be styled exactly as you’d style your natural hair for a special occasion: curled, straightened, waved, or put up in something more elaborate.

For events, we always recommend doing a trial run a few days beforehand. Style your topper the way you intend to wear it for the occasion, live in it for a few hours, and make any adjustments. Arriving on the day knowing exactly how it’ll look and feel means you can enjoy the event without a second thought about your hair.

And remember: if you’re ever unsure how to achieve a particular look, check our FAQ page or come in and we’ll show you. That’s what we’re here for.

You’ll Find Your Own Routine

Every woman finds her version of the morning routine. Some love a quick blow dry and go. Others prefer to style their topper the night before, rest it on its stand, and simply clip in the next morning. Some wear it up every day; others always wear it down. There’s no single right answer.

What we hear again and again is that after the first couple of weeks, the topper stops feeling like something to manage and starts feeling like just… your hair. That’s the moment most women have been waiting for, and it comes faster than you’d expect. Once you’ve mastered your everyday styling, keep an eye out for our hair topper care tips guide on washing, conditioning and storage, so your topper keeps looking its best for years to come.
