By the time they reach 50, a large proportion of women will experience some degree of hair loss — by some estimates as many as one in two. Yet for a topic so common, hair loss in women is rarely spoken about openly.
I’m Debbie, and here at Applebom in Toowoomba, women’s health and confidence are our main priorities. If you’re noticing changes in your hair, you’re far from alone, and understanding what’s happening is the first step. This guide walks you gently through the common causes and how we can help.
What Causes Hair Loss in Women?
There are many reasons you might experience hair loss across your life, from autoimmune conditions and stress to nutritional deficiencies, hormone imbalances and illness. Because the causes vary so much, understanding your own is important, and it’s something your GP can help with. Here are the most common ones we see.
Female Pattern Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia)
The most common cause is Female Pattern Hair Loss, also known as Androgenetic Alopecia. It happens when an increase in androgens (male hormones) causes hair follicles to shrink, so the hair they produce becomes finer over time.
There’s no single age for this to begin, though many women notice thinning or loss after menopause. For some it’s genetic, passed down from one parent or the other, though that isn’t always the case.
Other Causes: Health Conditions, Nutrition and Medication
Hair loss is also linked to autoimmune conditions such as thyroid dysfunction, and to conditions like PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). Other factors can play a part too:
● Restricted nutrition and severe deficiencies
● Insulin resistance, which can affect the hair growth cycle
● Certain medications and medical treatments, such as chemotherapy, which can cause temporary or permanent loss to varying degrees
Because these causes are so different, there’s no one-size-fits-all explanation, and no one-size-fits-all solution either.
Why I Brought Hair Toppers to Toowoomba
As a hairdresser who had been in the service of women through many phases of their lives, I often felt at a loss myself when they began to experience thinning. When a dear client of multiple decades came in to see me one day, we again discussed all the options she had tried over the years.
I’d become aware of hair toppers available in other cities, and I was blown away by not only the effect but the quality of the hair. They were seamless. Having now brought hair toppers to Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, we’ve been able to transform the lives of countless women, and it’s become the most rewarding work I’ve done.
How Can Hair Toppers Help?
A hair topper adds coverage and volume where you need it most, blending with your own hair for a natural look. Because your journey is unique, we offer private, one-on-one consultations, and we’ll always be honest if a full wig would suit you better.
Hair loss can bring a real drop in confidence, and sometimes social anxiety and more besides. We’re here to support you cosmetically and to help you feel like yourself again.
When Should You See a Doctor?
Please seek medical advice for any concerns related to hair loss. Because the causes can vary so widely, your GP is the right person to help you understand your body and set you on the right path. We work alongside that medical care, not instead of it — our role is cosmetic, and it’s to boost your confidence in your time of need.
